Welcome to 2015!
It is going to be a great year. Your best year yet! The mere fact that you are here with us on the EWC Blog, reading this post, means you are taking steps to EMBODY Wellness. Congratulations!
Let’s start with the facts:
Some of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions include:
- Lose weight
- Get fit
- Eat healthy food
- Manage stress
- Drink less alcohol
- Get organized
What do these resolutions all have in common? (Other than the fact that EMBODY Wellness can help you accomplish all of these! You don’t have to go it alone.) They are all non-specific, overarching, general goals.
Almost half of Americans make New Year’s Resolutions, but only 8% stick to what they resolve throughout the year.
But don’t stop making resolutions yet! Simply stating a resolution actually puts you well on the road to success. Studies show that one month after making a resolution, 64% of people are still going strong. After six months, however, only 44% are still on track. So, what goes wrong?
We think there are two issues: Firstly, resolutions tend to be big, grand daunting tasks, which are hard to tackle without a plan, support and accountability… and that is where we can step in! We specialize in providing just that. Second, 12 months is a really long time to flex your will-power muscle over and over again, especially in the face of a year’s worth of temptations: office parties, family gatherings, kids’ snacks, weddings, birthdays, holidays, promotions, candy jars, exhaustion, travel, plans, busy schedules, sick days and more!
So, we have a proposal for you! Let’s always be one month out from our resolutions! Instead of one big, general, daunting statement made on January 1st and expected to hold true through December 31st, we challenge you to make a monthly New You Resolution with the EWC Community!
Successful Resolvers embody many commonalities: they set mini-goals, they have a support system, they have a realistic plan, they believe they can do it.
Each month we will post a New You Resolution to the EWC Blog. It will be concrete, actionable and impactful. These are your mini-goals. By the end of the month, it will become your habit and you won’t have to think about it anymore, freeing you up for the next month’s New You Resolution! This is your realistic plan.
By the end of 2015, you will EMBODY Wellness, EMBODY Change and EMBODY Your Best Self! We believe in you!
Are you ready to get started?
January’s New You Resolution: Drink More Water!
During January, post your most creative pictures of you hydrating on Instagram or Facebook and tag #EMBDOYWellness and @EmbodyWellnessCompany. One winner will get our favorite water bottle for FREE!
As a baseline, you should aim to drink half of your body weight in ounces. So, if you weigh 120 pounds, then you should drink at least 60 oz of water daily. If you are active, drink more. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, drink more. If your pee is still a bright yellow or deep golden color, drink more!
Water is literally the fuel for our lives. It makes up 60% of our body weight! Every cell in our body needs H2O to function properly. Water helps with healthy digestion, regularity and detoxification. It helps with mental clarity, energy and satiety. Hungry? Try drinking a glass of water before sticking your hand in the chip bag.
Focus on increasing your water intake. Keep a water bottle nearby and sip it throughout the day. Keep a glass of water by your bedside as well. We suggest using a refillable water bottle so you can keep track of your daily consumption. Note how many ounces your bottle holds and how many times you need to refill it. Or start your day with your water bottles filled and don’t stop drinking until they are all empty. Have a glass of water with lemon when you wake up in the morning. Drink a cup before each meal. Be sure to hydrate before, during and after exercise
.
If plain water is tiresome, add chopped fruit or sliced cucumber and mint leaves or fresh lemon for a spa-worthy refreshment. Or sprinkle in some lemon or peppermint essential oil from doTerra, for on the go detoxing. We always keep a bottle in our bags. Switching it up with seltzer water is also a good option. We love our sodastream!
You can also increase your hydration with water-rich fruits and veggies too, like watermelon, spinach, oranges and cucumbers which are made up of as much as 90% water.
Your metabolism will thank you! Even slight dehydration causes your metabolism to slow. WebMD reports that drinking water before a meal causes you to eat an average of 75 calories less. 75 calories * 3 meals a day * 365 days a year = 82,125 calories saved. That adds up to nearly 25 pounds over the year! Even if you just drink a glass before lunch you are on your way to an 8 pound loss. We’ll drink to that!
Cheers to a New Year and a New You! Resolution #1: Drink More Water! Share with us how you are doing!
- Note: it is possible, although uncommon, to drink too much water. This results in an electrolyte imbalance of low blood sodium levels called Hyponatermia.
